Paper by FUCHS from ISCR 7th 1994 Vienna Austria
From 1990 to 1992 exposed aggregate concrete was used for the construction of 14 sections of Austrian motorways. This technology offers a noise reduction and a higher level of skid resistance. In order to evaluate the skid resistance of these surfaces in comparison to others, measurements were carried out in 1993 with the new friction meter, called "Stuttgarter Reibungsmesser", of the BFPZ Arsenal. The variety of materials and methods applied during the construction process showed effects on the measuring results (e.g. experience of the constructor, the type of chippings used, the curing method, etc.) Further development allowed for solving the initial problems with the production of the exposed aggregate concrete and now very good skid resistance values can be achieved.
