Major Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation by Rapid Slab Replacement. Pacific Motorway Queensland

Paper and Presentation by Robert Piva and John Hodgkinson, Major Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation by Rapid Slab Replacement. Pacific Motorway Queensland from ASCP 5th Concrete Pavements Conference 2019

Rehabilitation of concrete road pavements by rapid slab replacement in single shifts has been established in Australia for ten years. Until recently it has been used for spot replacement of slabs in both road and airport applications. In South East Queensland in 2013, a program over a series of 22 slab replacements demonstrating cost and time reductions using this process was successfully completed. In 2017 this was further extended to a major program of 200 slab replacements over 51 night time shifts on the Queensland Pacific Motorway. This paper describes the Pacific Motorway pavement, the detailed investigation, planning, testing and training, and execution of this rehabilitation program using CTS Rapid Set ® concrete incorporating calcium sulfoaluminate cement. On site coordination of work methods and equipment, traffic management and on site concrete strength testing prior to re-opening to traffic are also presented. This work received an award for excellence from the Australian Concrete Repair Association in 2018.
