Joints in Concrete Roads

Paper by DAO from ISCR 9th 2004 Instanbul Turkey

Concrete has been used as a construction material for road pavements for many years. Over the last 40 years, the world has seen a major program of motorway and trunk road constructions. The increase in the amount and individual weight of vehicular traffic has made increasing demands on the performance of concrete joints. This paper deals with the main types of joints in concrete roads (construction and expansion joints), and the problems associated with them. It also includes discussion of the junction between rigid and flexible pavements and joint movements. Alternative load transfer systems to dowels are discussed. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations for further research are made.
