Further Improvement of the Durability of Concrete Pavements by using Higher Strengths

Paper by PFEIFER from ISCR 7th 1994 Vienna Austria

Road concrete in the thirties did not have a particularly high strength, but it grew over the years. Strength tests on cores, taken last year, show that the strength -compressive as well as the more important splitting tensile- of the old section and also of almost all new ones is relatively high. Because of the high rresent traffic it is necessary to have a high strength from the beginning. The durability of concrete pavements should be improved not by demanding greater thickness but by estabishing higher demands for the strength, especially for the tensile strength. Nowadays most companies are able to achieve this.
