Frost Damage Prevention of Concrete Pavement

Paper by VERBEEK JURRIAANS from ISCR 9th 2004 Instanbul Turkey

Due to severe frost damage at the main platform on a military transportation airfield in the Netherlands, investigations have been carried out to find the course of this damage. Tests have been carried out to compare the frost sensitivity of Portland cement and Fly-ash cement. Also the influence of several de-icing chemicals are tested. Experience in Scandinavian countries learned that a good frost resistant concrete contains a certain amount of air void and more important a described distribution of void particles. With this void demands in contracts several projects have been realised and evaluated.
