Factors Affecting the Abrasion Wear of Concrete Pavements

Paper by SHACKEL FAHKRI AYTON from ISCR 7th 1994 Vienna Austria

This paper describes the application of a relatively simple and inexpensive laboratory test deiived Iiuiii ASTM procedure C779 for evaluating abrasion resistance of concrete surfaces. Factors affecting the reproducibility and precision of the test are quantified. The paper describes the use of the test to evaluate trial mixes of paving quality concrete. Factors influencing the wear resistance of concrete are identified. The effects of mix variables such as the inclusion of fly ash are described and the impnrtnr.e of the curing regime is demonstrated. The results indicate that the wear resistance of paving concrete can be controlled by a careful choice of the mix proportions and the curing conditions.
