Evaluation of the Reliability of Concrete Pavements Considering the Fatigue Properties

Paper by KOYANAGAWA YONEYA KOKUBU from ISCR 7th 1994 Vienna Austria

In the mechanistic design method of concrete pavements, the flexural fatigue properties have a great influence when analysing the design life. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of stress ratio (YmIn/cmax), maximum size of coarse aggregate and static flexural strength of the pavement concrete on the flexural fatigue properties of the concrete by conducting various tests. As a result of the statistical analysis of the fatigue tests, it was found that the effects of these factors are minimal and that they do not need to be taken into account for the actual designing. Due to the fact that the flexural fatigue life of concrete shows a fair amount of scatter as its specific property, and accordingly, the reliability of concrete pavements is influenced considerable by this scatter. In this study, applying the Monte Carlo simulation te-nhniqiie, analysis are made of the influence of this scatter on the service life of concrete pavements and an investigation on the flexural fatigue curve for concrete pavement design is conducted.
