Effect of pavement roughness on fuel consumption

Presentation by Arvo Tinni on the effect of pavement roughness on fuel consumption from Sydney Forum 16 March 2009

The presentation by Arvo Tinni provides worked examples of fuel efficiency savings with reduced roughness.

The basis of the presentation is an ARRB Research Report ARR31, which is based on 7 prior studies. Concluding that a unit change in IRI has an average change in fuel consumption of 1%.

The presentation goes on to consider the more value proposition of concrete pavements over asphalt when considering the specification limits for roughness for each type (at the time of preparing the presentation - 55 and 110 NAASRA counts for concrete and asphalt respectively).
