Development of Performance Curves for Thin Bonded Concrete Overlays on Asphalt in Minnesota24

Paper and Presentation by Thomas Burnham, Development of Performance Curves for Thin Bonded Concrete Overlays on Asphalt in Minnesota from ASCP 5th Concrete Pavements Conference 2019

Bonded concrete overlays on asphalt (BCOA), historically known as whitetoppings, are growing in popularity as an option for rehabilitating distressed asphalt pavements. Despite their application over the past several decades, the existence of performance models for this type of pavement are rare. It was the objective of this study to develop predictive performance models, based on measured performance of existing BCOA projects in Minnesota, which will eventually lead to adoption into the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s (MnDOT) pavement management process. In this project, 26 BCOA projects in service throughout Minnesota were examined to determine their historical performance up through 2018. To supplement historical information, each project was visited periodically from 2015 to 2018 to gather data that was used to develop performance curves representing current trends in BCOA performance in terms of MnDOT pavement condition indices. Finally, two predictive performance models, based on International Roughness Index (IRI), were developed for undoweled BCOA projects in Minnesota.
