Design Methods for Cement Bound Bases in Pavement Structures

Paper by STET THEWESSEN from ISCR 10th 2006 Brussels Belgium

Application of bound foundation materials is attractive and allows to reduce the required asphalt thickness due to the high stiffness of the cement bound material. Unfortunately, the design of a pavement with a bound base is not standard. This hampers the application of cemented waste materials in road bases. This paper addresses design approaches for cemented and flexible bound bases. The paper presents a method for a full structural design of a pavement with a bound base. Attention is paid to the life calculation of the bound base in an asphalt or cement concrete pavement and an estimation method to predict the required bituminous thickness is presented.
