Concrete overlays. Project reports & updates. Field trials – LNDG. Materials – joint sealants, fibres, GFRP - ASCP Forum Sydney 29 Oct, 2018

ABOUT THIS FORUM
The recent concrete overlay workshops delivered by Gary Fick and Dale Harrington from the USA
created much interest in the pavement community including RMS. Our forum will open with some
feedback from the workshops by ASCP and RMS.
As our industry gears up for pavement works on the Woolgoolga to Ballina project, Michael
Heathwood and David Groth will give an update on the progress of this major project, the progress
of the rigid pavement works, and more feedback on the joint seal trials conducted by Pacific
Complete.
Stringless paving systems are widely used within USA and were strongly endorsed in the concrete
overlays workshops. Allan Archbold from Leica Geosystems will present on 3D paver control
systems and their merits in slipform, asphalt, no fines and profiling.
Cameron Peace from RMS will review the concrete pavement construction on the OH2Ku project,
including 32 mm aggregate trials, crack mapping, joints and joint sealants and other. Yvonne Bowles
from RMS will report on the early results from a field trial of LNDG at Valla which has specifically
been undertaken as a showcase for quite concrete road surfaces for the local community. Her
presentation will include the background to determining the location of the trial, discussion on the
technical aspects of the works completed and of the noise measurement brief and expected
outputs.
In the afternoon sessions, we will look at several materials for concrete pavements, starting with an
explanation of various sealants’ chemistries, their benefits, and selection for various applications by
Tremco. A recent amalgamation between Elasto Plastic Concrete and Hagihara Industries created
BarChip and Todd Clarke from this organisation will present on macro synthetic fibres in pavements.
Glass fibre reinforced polymers are becoming established as an alternative to steel reinforcement.
Greg Sieders from Bluey Technologies will present on their technical properties, manufacture,
applications, and international standards for this type of reinforcement. John Figueroa has explored
the use of this reinforcement in CRCP and will present an overview of design of CRCP using GFRP
bars and the critical factors which may have an impact on field performance.
At the time of this forum, abstract submissions for our 2019 conference will have just closed. We
will give some early insights into the topics which may be presented at the conference and some
details about the workshop on the day after the conference.
This will be our last forum for 2018.
