Concrete Overlay Thickness Design Based on FWD Deflections for Airports

Paper by HACHIYA SATO UMENO from ISCR 7th 1994 Vienna Austria

Since the overlay thickness must be decided considerinq the structural condition of the existing pavement, FWD was introduced to evaluate the mechanical properties and to obtain input data for the overlay design. In the case of concrete overlays for concrete pavements, the overlay thickness depends on the existing slab thickness and the bonding conditions at the interface. The composite slab theory was adopted taking these factors into account to develop a reasonable overlay design method. An experimental study was also conducted to establish a construction procedure enabling a thinner, and thus more economic, overlay.
