ASCP Forum (Online) – Tunnels Pavements, Concrete Supply, Procurement – Tuesday 12 April 2022

Resources for ASCP April 2022 Forum

Tunnels allow rapid and unobstructed transport facilities in big congested cities. Think the recent NorthConnex! Whilst considered an expensive solution, tunnels provide a protected system for the pavement, thus tunnels reduce the maintenance cost of the system, but there are wider considerations in the design, detailing, materials selection and construction process.  This forum brings together seasoned experts across the pavement supply chain and sustainability to share their respective experiences.

Agenda

The current approach to pavement types in tunnels was presented by George Vorobieff, Head to Head International. His presentation drew from work on the recently updated Austroads Guide to Road Tunnels, industry experience amongst other sources.

With substantial ongoing tunnel pavement construction ongoing in NSW, Gary Schwarz, Hanson provided an update on the concrete supplier's perspective. Gary reviewed recent developments and unique challenges associated with concrete supply in an underground environment.

The design of tunnel pavements presents obstacles not encountered within conventional surface roads. Jun So, Arcadis outlined several unique design and detailing challenges associated with tunnel pavement design, including examples from several tunnel design projects across Australia.

David Kelly is leading a TfNSW wide initiative Sustainable Procurement in Infrastructure sponsored by Pamela Henderson,  Executive Director Technical Services which is a multidisciplinary group across Transport – including Sydney Metro.  David provided an insight into this initiative.

Justin Moss, President ASCP provided an update on recent activities and initiatives, including additional ways to get involved with ASCP going forward.
