Roundabouts with Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavements

Roundabouts have already been used in Belgium for several years to regulate traffic at major road intersections. The surfaces at roundabouts are particularly subject to tangential stresses that result from centrifugal forces and from the overload on the outside wheels by the more or less significant tilting of the vehicles on roundabouts. In most cases, the combination of these effects leads to the formation of ruts in the asphalt top layer at roundabouts on roads with heavy and intense traffic. In order to achieve a structure that can offer resistance to these stresses, the Roads Department in Mons decided in 1993 to use continuously reinforced concrete to form the surface of roads at roundabouts.
