Paper by KHAZANOVICH DARTER from ISCR 8th 1998 Lisbon Portugal
This paper presents transverse joint spalling models developcd for both jointed plain concrete pavements (JPCP) and jointed reinforced concrete pavements (JRCP). These models were developed as a part of a rigid pavement performance study (RIPPER) conducted by ERES Consultants, Inc. and sponsored by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The models are based on the performance of 164 JPCP sections and 109 JRCP sections surveyed under this study. The sections are located lhroiighout the United States and represent different climatic regions and designs. Based on the analysis of the model, the effect of design features and site conditions (sealant type and climatic variables) on expected pavement life were analyzed. Finally, the model was applied to develop recommendations for design of JPCP and JRCP pavements to reduce joint spailiug.
