The concept of reinforcing pavements and of reinforced earth for improving the bearing capacity of insitu soils both under static and dynamic loading has gained popularity in receriL The word geotextile is now accepted by all civil Engineers to describe the textile used for improving the behavioural (structural) and functional aspects of the soil in a cost effective and viable manner.1 The present developments in the use of geotextiles in Civil Engineering are an offshoot of the developments in the chemistry of polymers combined with those in the field of manufacture of fabrics4ln this presentation, efforts have been made to improve the subgrade soil of Chandigarh by the use of geotextile GPB-203 and CBR values have been found to increase, provided the geotexitle layer inserted intercepts the effective pressure bulb generated due to the imposed load which results in the reduction of thickness required for the pavement and proves to be economical in the long run.
