A Bonded Concrete Overlay in An Urban Boulevard in Calvià (Mallorca, Spain)

The Boulevard of Peguera, placed in the municipality of Calviá (Mallorca, Spain), is the main commercial axis of the town and, for this reason, it supports an important traffic compared with other urban roads, around 100 heavy vehicles per day. At the beginning of 2008, the Council of Calviá proposed the rehabilitation of the existing pavement of the Boulevard, made of concrete blocks, with the condition of minimizing the amount of material to be taken either to land filling or to waste treatment plants, since this is a big environmental and economic problem in the Mallorca Island. In consequence, the work consisted of the removal of blocks and cement mortar, placing a 12 cm thick concrete overlay HF-4,0 MPa bonded to the existing concrete base slab. Bonding was achieved by means of grinding the existing base slab and spreading a cement grout of top of it. The final texture of the slab was achieved by colouring and imprinting the pavement to provide it with a pattern simulating the original blocks.
