Sustainability and Concrete Pavements for Real Engineers

Practicing engineers are under increasing pressure from pavement owners to become ?sustainable?. There are a myriad of publications, models and rating systems available that aim to assist them in this endeavor, in fact so many that they become overwhelmed. This paper provides practical guidance that includes definitions of the terminology, what can be done to make things better, where to get help to quantify improvements, and what factors to consider through the design, construction and maintenance process. The paper also introduces a short publication that has recently been completed. Topics include the seven basic principles behind real sustainable concrete pavements and how they can be applied in everyday practice
