Recycling Concrete Pavements in Motorway Construction

Concrete, which has withstood all the loads on heavily used roads for many decades, can be used again as a concrete aggegrate in road pavement construction after undergoing appropriate treatment. The example of four pavement batches prepared by 2 different companies in 1992 and 1993 on the A27 motorway m Lower Saxony shows that it is possible to use recycled material both as sole coarse-grained material in the lower concrete layer which is not subject to very exacting treatment requirements, and as an aggregate in a single-layer concrete pavement. In the second case, however, the treatment of old concrete pavement is much more expensive.
