Thin Concrete Overlays on Old Flexible Pavements

Paper by SILFWERBRAND PETERSSON from ISCR 7th 1994 Vienna Austria

Extensive rutting exists on many high volume traffic roads in Sweden. Traditional maintenance means asphalt resurfacing every second or third year. Adding a thin high strength concrete overlay would prolong the service life of the repair due to the high wear resistance of this kind of overlay. To study the behaviour of the composite pavement structure composed of the conrete overlay and the existing asphalt pavement, new field tests are being conducted in the Stockholm area. Four test sections are included. Parameters studied include overlay type and thickness, presence or absence of steel fibre, and joint spacing. After 6 months under Irdilic the overall performanco is promising.
