Accelelated Loading Test of Porous Cement Concrete Pavement to Evaluate Durability and Permeability

Paper by TANIGUCHI YOSHIDA from ISCR 9th 2004 Instanbul Turkey

This paper presents results of study on evaluating durability and permeability of porous cement concrete pavement by accelerated loading test at PWRI pavement test track. The following procedure was conducted to evaluate the durability and permeability of porous cement concrete pavement. Three test sections were constructed in 1997. These sections were consisted of porous cement concrete (maximum grain size: 5mm and 13mm) and porous asphalt concrete. Every 150,000 times of 49kN equivalent wheel loads, cracking ratio, evenness, rutting depth were measured. Detail investigations were conducted after 750,000 times loading in 2001. These investigations were observations of cores, damage on joints and materials filled in a cavity, functional recovery test and constant head permeability test using cores. Dryness contraction and unsuitable void content were confirmed in these investigations. This study obtained the following conclusions. 1) Porous cement concrete pavement is more durable than porous asphalt concrete pavement 2) Dryness contraction caused cracking and fall of load transfer 3) Unsuitable void content and grain size caused cavity blocking and made restoration function difficult. Therefore, porous cement concrete pavement is considered to be applicable to actual roads if the problem of dryness contraction is settled and higher void content is more durable.
